Painting by A.I. Kuindzhi was exhibited as the only painting at the exhibition in 1880. The picture was the only one at the exhibition and became a real sensation. The artist himself said that this is the main work of his life.

Kuindzhi concentrated all his talent on conveying the illusion of real light, and finding a composition that will convey a sense of spatiality and light. "Moonlit Night on the Dnieper" was the most convincing work that conveyed the lighting effect so real. The artist transmitted the moonlight and the radiance of light from the moon so precisely that the audience who saw the picture was amazed.

Harmoniousness and calm, simplicity of images in the picture. The artist chose the top point from above for work. From here he has the opportunity to display more sky on canvas. Here the moon shines. She colors the clouds in cold light. Below you can see how the moonlight fluctuates on the waters of the Dnieper. You can see the slow flow of the river, its bends and the shoreline.

Kuindzhi was called the artist of light. He received this title for his love of accurate light transmission of sunsets, midday shadows and moonlit nights.

The water surface of the Dnieper, a velvet night blue, is illuminated by moonlight. Thanks to such lighting, Ukrainian huts whiten. Despite the darkness, in the picture you can distinguish numerous objects. These are huts, and leafy trees, and crooked stalks of tatarnik. All this is covered with night darkness, but is seen in brown.

The celestial sphere is depicted by the majestic and infinite artist.

Creating a picture, Kuindzhi applied one artistic technique. He compared the warm reddish tint of the earth with the cold silver tones. By this, the artist achieved the effect of depth of space. The sensation of vibrating light was obtained due to the use of small dark strokes in illuminated places.

The painting is in the State Tretyakov Gallery.
